Preston announces funding for 16th District literacy program

CHICAGO – State Senator Willie Preston is proud to announce that an organization in the 16th District will be receiving $60,000 for literacy program enhancements, volunteer training and more.

“Literacy is the foundation for everything: a good job, financial independence, being able to help your kids with homework,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “This $60,000 grant means that more adults in our district will get the one-on-one instruction they need to build those skills. I’m proud to see this investment in our community, and I’ll keep fighting for the resources our libraries and literacy programs need to serve every family in the Sweet 16th District.”

Preston law expands pathways to trades and technical careers for Illinois students

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois high school students will have greater flexibility to pursue career and technical education under a new law championed by State Senator Willie Preston, which expands pathways to graduation and workforce readiness.

The law allows approved career and technical education courses to count toward high school diploma requirements as alternatives to foreign language courses, providing students with more options to align their education with their career goals.

“For too long, we’ve treated success like it follows a single path,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “The reality is that our students have different talents different ambitions and different plans for their future. This law recognizes that and gives young people more opportunities to build skills that can lead directly to good paying jobs and rewarding careers.”
