CHICAGO – State Senator Willie Preston announced he is leading an economic, educational and cultural delegation to Accra, Ghana at the end of March, strengthening the relationship between the state and Ghana through commercial opportunity, cultural exchange, education partnerships and global connection.
“For centuries, the story of African Americans has connected Illinois and Ghana, and now we have the privilege and responsibility to bolster that connection,” said Preston (D-Chicago), chair of the Englewood-Ghana Sankofa Economic and Cultural Delegation. “This journey represents far more than travel; it represents a bridge between Illinois and Ghana, between commerce and culture, and between past and future.”
The delegation – which includes leaders from business, education, government and community organizations – will spend the week meeting with government leaders, entrepreneurs, educators and cultural institutions who are helping shape Ghana’s growing role in the global economy. Beginning March 20 in Accra, the trip will foster strategic economic partnerships that build long-term cultural understanding and financial benefits for Illinois.
Through activities such as guided tours, business conferences and group meals, delegates will be offered the opportunity to explore Ghana’s growing business ecosystem and rich cultural heritage. Through this structured networking and cultural immersion, the goal is to bridge gaps while allowing delegates to understand Ghana’s relationship-driven business landscape.
“My vision for this delegation is simple, yet powerful: Create real and lasting partnerships that benefit the people of Illinois while honoring the deep historical and cultural ties between African Americans and the nation of Ghana,” Preston added.
The Englewood-Ghana Sankofa Economic and Cultural Delegation will work under Preston’s leadership to inspire a renewed sense of global connection.
